What Does it Mean to be ISO 9001:2015 Certified?

by Natalie Schlueter

Certifications can be very confusing and misleading, and therefore might not mean much to you when you see certain claims from organizations that they are certified in this or that. Certifications do mean a lot and can help you uncover certain practices that the organization is utilizing.

The amount of certifications and the types of certifications a company has can assist in your understanding of the quality of product you will be receiving. An ISO 9001:2015 certification is more than just certification, it represents the values that the organization holds in its internal affairs, and therefore it also predicts the quality of product that you will receive.

Read on to find out more about the ISO 9001:2015 certification and what it means for the consumer.

What is an ISO 9001:2015 Certification?

An ISO 9001:2015 certification is a process that takes place over many months. The International Standards Organization (ISO) audits the company based on quality management system principles. It is the international standard for a quality management system.

ISO determines if all of the principles are being implemented in the current system management of the organization. If they are, the organization will be given a certification. If they are not, it is not the end of the road for the organization. ISO will work with the organization to reach the benchmarks and goals to obtain the certification over time.

An ISO 9001:2015 certification is different from a UL certification or any other external influencing certification as it focuses on the internal management and not the overall product for the consumer, but the internal management, when done correctly, can produce an even better product for the consumer.

What Does the ISO 9001:2015 Certification Mean for the Consumer?

Here are just a few benefits of investing in an ISO 9001:2015 certified company:

  • The organization will have improved quality of services
  • The organization will be committed to high quality products
  • Enhanced customer service

The internal quality management system with enhanced abilities should produce a quality product and therefore enhance the customer service experience. The Quality Management System in place at an organization does not exactly dictate the quality of products, but if the organization has been audited and forced to reevaluate, identify and implement improvements, then there should be an increased quality in product.

Should I Invest in an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Company?

The answer to this will always be yes. No matter what the company does, whether it is in service or manufacturing, it can be certified. An ISO 9001:2015 certified company means that the company is dedicated to improvements and wants to be recognized internationally for their efforts. It is a community of organizations that are dedicated to their internal operations as well as customer experiences.

When you see that a company says they are ISO 9001:2015 certified you can be sure that they are following best practices and really care about the quality of their products, and their efficiency, effectiveness and decision-making processes. These companies are dedicated to being a part of internationally recognized standards for a quality management system.
